He was an American lawyer, army colonel, horse and cattle breeder, and philanthropist. He made a fortune as a wildcatter in the oil industry. The sixty-six acre botanical garden opened in 1984. It is located in East Dallas on the shore of White Rock Lake. It has nineteen named gardens.
