- Chogha Zanbil, or Dur Untash, in the Khuzestan province of Iran is one of the few existent ziggurats outside Mesopotamia. The cylindrical altar located in the northeast, northwest and southwest, within the viciniti of the ziqqurat, were likeli used for religious festivals. The altar located on the southwest side of the ziqqurrat has been partially restored by Mrs. Ghirsman. Unfortunately, due to the desigh of the restoration, this altar is commonly mistaken for a sundial.
