  • The Trajan Column or Column of Trajan in Italian, Colonna Traiana is a commemorative monument erected in Rome by order of the emperor Trajan. It is located in the Forum of Trajan, near the Quirinal, north of the Roman Forum. Completed in the year 113, it is a column 30 meters high 38 including the pedestal on which it rests covered by a spiral bas-relief that commemorates the victories of Trajan against the Dacians now Romania. The column consists of 18 huge blocks of Carrara marble, each of which weighs approximately 40 tons and has a diameter of about four meters. The complete sculptural frieze measures about 200 m and 23 times around the column. Inside, a spiral staircase with 185 steps allows access to a viewing platform at the top. Originally the column was finished with a statue of a bird, possibly an eagle, 1 and later a statue of Trajan himself was placed in its place. In 1588 and by order of Pope Sixtus V, it was replaced by a statue of St. Peter, which is still preserved.
