- Photo title: Canary Islands, Lanzarote: Vineyard in Winter
- Author: Maijaliisa
- Cover photo description:
- This unusual vista is actually of a vineyard. Lanzarote`s vineyards have thousands of holes and walls - each holding a single vine - to protect the plants from strong winds and to provide them with water that is trapped in the holes. Larger volcanic stones are balanced around the wind-facing edge of the hole, creating a low, semicircular or square barrier. The height of the walls and the depth of the holes are important: The vine has to be able get enough sun. Almost all wineries bottle their own product and sell their wines in bodegas run by the vintners themselves. This is the La Geria Winery www.lageria.com.
