  • Cover photo description:
  • The Cochamó valley in Chile`s Lakes region Los Lagos offers spectacular mountain scenary. Carved from the Andes range by the la Junta river on its way to the Reloncaví fjord, is very close to the border with Argentina. Its granite mountains are becoming an international hotspot for rock climbers. Some rock walls reach one thousand metters of vertical cliffs and have been compared to those of Yosemite. The valley also hosts a very beautiful and valuable patch of temperate rainforest, with several alerce trees believed to be some thousands years old. A neighbouring valley, the valley of río Puelo, was recently at risk of being flooded by a large hydropower project, but after a strong resistance from the local communities, permission for the project was revoked by the Chilean Supreme Court.
