It passed to the possession of Portugal in 1190 and underwent successive transformations as a medieval fortress. It is a national monument and obligatory tourist destination in the city of Palmela, district of SetÃºbal, Portugal, 40 kms south of Lisbon. Palmela is a pleasant city in the Natural Park of ArrÃ¡bida Mounts.
