- Because of San Francisco`s many hills and valleys, it was hard to get radio and television reception. Starting in 1971, work was finally started on a very tall tower specifically for the transmission of radio and television signals. Completed in 1973, the tower was able to give its first transition on Independence Day, July 4, 1973. A total of 13 television and three radio stations now use Sutro Tower for their transmission. The tower itself stand 977 feet, on a hill, Mount Sutro, that is an additional 834 feet. This gives a very clear line of sight in all directions.
