  • Cover photo description:
  • The first name of Petunia Nicotiana axillaris appeared thanks to the French naturalist Jean Baptiste Lamarck, who in 1793 discovered and described the plant during a scientific expedition to the countries of South America. This small error occurred because of the similarity of the leaves of these plants with the leaves of tobacco. When, ten years later, several species similar to Nicotiana axillaris were found, they were isolated in a separate genus, which was named Petunia from the Brazilian word `petun`, meaning `tobacco`.
