- Cover photo description:
- In 1901 President William McKinley visited San Francisco for the ground breaking of a monument dedicated to Admiral George Dewey, for his victory in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War. McKinley was assassinated six months later. The statue is of the Greek goddess Nike, the goddess of victory, modeled by Alma Speckles, the future wife of sugar magnet Adolph Spreckles. The trident, in the statues left hand, represents Dewey while the wreath represents McKinley. The statue was dedicated in 1903 by McKinley`s successor, Theodor Roosevelt.
