Sailboat and motorboat moored on Rio Guadiana. The human presence in the territory that currently constitutes the municipality of Alcoutim can be traced back to the Middle Palaeolithic period. Archaeological remains of this period have recently been discovered in the parish of Pereiro. But it was from the Neolithic period 5,000 BC to 3,000 BC that the megalithic builders settled a little throughout the territory of Alcoutim.There are also many elements that attest to the continuity of human communities in the following periods - necropolis of Bronze Age and Iron Age cists. In the late fifteenth century, it became a county in favor of the Marquis of Vila Real. During the nineteenth century, after the liberal struggles in which it is occupied by the Miguelistas 1833, Alcoutim definitively loses this strategic-military position and is incorporated, totally or partially, by the neighboring counties. From the end of the 19th century until 2013, the council was reorganized into five parishes Alcoutim, GiÃƒÂµes, Martim Longo, Pereiro and Vaqueiros. In 2013, as part of a national administrative reform Law no. 11-A / 2013 of January 28, the Union of the Parishes of Alcoutim and Pereiro was created, by the aggregation of the old parishes of Alcoutim and Pereiro, with headquarters in Alcoutim. Alcoutim belongs to the judicial circle of Faro and the region of Vila Real de Santo AntÃƒÂ³nio.
