  • Cover photo description:
  • Not far from the Old Shuamta, just a couple of kilometers away, is the monastery of New Shuamta, founded in the early 16th century Tinatin Gurieli, who was heading to Kakheti to marry king Levan, protege of the then conquered Georgia Safavid clan led by Shah Ismail. The marriage of the daughter of the Prince of Guria with Levan was to help preserve peace. According to legend, Queen Tina had a dream in which she built an Orthodox Church. On the way to Levan she had a vision according to legend, the dogwood Bush, which she often saw in a dream on the place where the temple should be laid, which led her to the idea to establish a monastery on this place.
