  • Cover photo description:
  • Folgefonna, the 3rd largest glacier in Norway, covers 205 square kilometers, and is 37 kilometers from north to south, 16 kilometres at its widest. At its deepest the ice is 300 metres thick. To the east and the west, Folgefonna’s branches reach down the valleys like rivers of ice, like Buerbreen in Odda and Bondusbreen in Mauranger. The oldest species of rock on the Folgefonna Penninsula are more than 550 million years old. Huge masses of quartzite – bright and hard species of rock, where few plants grow. In Norwegian this is called Grey Rock. Through thousands of years the land was folded, slided and lifted. Then the Ice Age arrived. The rocky surface today is the product of ice and water shaping and polishing.
