  • Cover photo description:
  • A modern Sun Temple is located in the village of Mattan, just 2 km from the ruins of the original Sun Temple of Martand, the oldest Sun Temple in India. Mattan is 34 km from Pahalgam, on the Srinagar Pahalgam highway. In front of this modern Temple is a holy spring, with crystal clear water gushing out in the centre. The temple complex is regarded as the place of ritual ceremony among the Hindus, and one of those religious places in India where the priests and pundits used to gather for worshiping the Sun god. Apart from the Sun Temple there are temples of Lord Vishnu, Hanuman & Shani. The place is also sacred to the Sikhs as Saint Guru Nanak stayed here for 13 days. A Gurudwara has also been built here. Presently, the temple complex is under tight security, controlled by paramilitary forces and special permission is required to enter this temple.
