- Cover photo description:
- The fortified town of Mont-Dauphin, built by Vauban from 1693, subsequently altered and improved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Past its pink marble walls, there are the barracks where the soldiers of Louis XIV lived, the bartizans where they were on watch, the powder store and the arsenal where they kept their guns. Built between 1693 and 1695, the Poudriere was designed by Vauban, and it is one of the oldest buildings in the fort. It could store more than one hundred tons of powder on two levels.
