  • Cover photo description:
  • Each gate in the Forbidden City has spike nails on its doors to hold the boards in place. Initially, the builders simply hammered in the nails, but when it turned out that the spikes lined up in a row looked very nice, they began to decorate the nails with the knobs. In accordance with the building standards of the Ministry of Labor of the Qing Dynasty on the double wings of the palace gates in the Forbidden City, the number of spikes could be: 81 spikes 9 to 9 rows, 49 spikes 7 to 7 rows and 25 spikes 5 to 5 rows. Their number symbolized the three ranks of the gates, where 81 spikes is the highest, as the nine is the imperial number.
