Turin Piedmont Italy The royal palace of Venaria Reale in Piedmontese Ã«l Castel Ã«d la VenerÃ¬a is one of the Savoy Residences, part of the UNESCO Serial site, which has been listed on the World Heritage List since 1997. The Venaria palace was designed by the architect Amedeo di Castellamonte. It was commissioned by Duke Carlo Emanuele II who intended to make it the base for hunting trips on the hilly Turinese moorland. The same name in the Latin language of the palace, Venatio Regia, is derived from the term hunting royal palace. The village was joined by many houses and palaces of workers and ordinary citizens who wanted to live in the surroundings of the palace, until it became Venaria Reale an independent municipality of the province of Turin. The choice of the site, at the foot of the Lanzo Valleys, was favored by the proximity of the extensive forests known as the Great Country, rich in game: a territory that extends for a hundred kilometers to the Alpine mountains, reaching south and east in the vicinity of the capital.
