- Author: Redwood8
- Cover photo description:
- Valley of Fire State Park is a public recreation and nature preservation area covering nearly 46,000 acres 19,000 ha located 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Early man moved into southern Nevada as far back as 11,000 years ago. The most obvious evidence of occupation is the petroglyphs carved into the rocks by the Basketmaker culture about 2,500 years ago, followed later by the Early Pueblo culture. The state park derives its name from red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago.
