  • Jewish Quarter The Jews settled in our villa in the eleventh century. In Ribadavia, the Jewish population increased and developed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when the fourteenth century arrived a Jewish population of 1,500 inhabitants appears, half of the total of those in the town, according to the chronicler Froissard; and so empathetic they were with the Christians, who lived each other in fraternal consortium, outside the religious. So, in January of the year 1386, when the English army under the command of Sir Thomas Percy was put in place in the town of Ribadavia, in defense of the rights to the throne of the Duke of Alencaster, by his wife Mrs. Constanza, daughter of King D. Peter the cruel, the Jews making common cause with the other inhabitants, took part in the defense of the town of Ribadavia, in charge of defending the wall of the Magdalena and New Gate, which surrounded his neighborhood, in this contest they lost
