  • Pictured is a statue of Saint Bassus of Nice on the exterior of the Nice Cathedral. He is a 3rd-century Roman Catholic saint and martyr, traditionally the earliest named bishop of Nice. He was martyred for his faith under the Emperor Decius by being burned with red-hot blades and pierced from head to feet by two large ship-building nails, one through each foot. The cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church which is the seat of the Diocese of Nice. Construction began in 1650 and was finished in 1685. New structures and decorative elements were added until 1949. The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Reparata. It has been classified as a national monument since August 9th, 1906. The French name is Basilique-Cathédrale Sainte-Marie et Sainte-Réparate de Nice
