  • Photo title: A Mated Pair of Sandhill Cranes Crossing a Street at Sunset
  • Author: Natureheart
  • Cover photo description:
  • I saw this mated pair of Sandhill cranes walking across a road while hiking down a nearby prairie. Sandhill Cranes are very large, tall birds with a long neck, long legs, and very broad wings. The bulky body tapers into a slender neck; the short tail is covered by drooping feathers that form a “bustle.” The head is small and the bill is straight and longer than the head. The sandhill crane is a species of large crane of North America and extreme northeastern Siberia. The common name of this bird refers to habitat like that at the Platte River, on the edge of Nebraska`s Sandhills on the American Plains. Scientific name: Grus canadensis
