  • The Mexican narrow-mouthed toad Hypopachus variolosus is a species of sheep frog native to the Pacific and Caribbean lowlands from southern Texas to Costa Rica. Sheep frogs make a distinctive call that resembles a sheep`s bleat during and after rainfall in warm months. This species occurs in variety of habitats: tropical humid forests, open disturbed habitats, and various humid sites in more arid areas. There are no major threats to this widespread species. Sheep frogs are current listed as Threatened by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and are protected from collection. Reproduction is aquatic. Wright and Wright 1949 state that breeding takes place from March–September following heavy rains. Sheep frogs have a specized diet, taking predominant ants and termites
