- Cover photo description:
- It is believed that this broken menhir was once erected there by 4700 BC, along with 18 other menhirs, and broken there by 4000 BC. It is not really known what caused the menhir to collapse and end up broken into the four pieces that we now find. The most popular theory is that stone was deliberately broken. The truth is that the other menhirs were removed and reused in later nearby monuments. Although the latest research suggests that it was an earthquake that knocked it down. Whatever the reason that caused it to fall, it was broken down and divided into four pieces. When it was standing it was on average 20,60 metres high, weighing 330 tonnes. It is said that the stone comes from a rocky outcrop located several kilometres from Locmariaquer. The impressive dimensions of this menhir still divide specialists on the techniques that were used for transport and erection, but the fact that it was achieved during the Neolithic era is something important to keep in mind.
