  • Cover photo description:
  • Organic farming and organic farming are often used to designate sustainable farming systems that do not allow the use of synthetic chemicals harmful to human health and the environment, such as some varied types of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, [1] [ 2] nor genetically modified organisms. Its proponents believe that in healthy soil, maintained without the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and non-organic pesticides, foods are of a higher quality than conventional foods. Several countries, including the United States NOP, Japan JAS - Japan Agricultural Standard, Switzerland BioSuisse, the European Union EEC 2092/91, Australia AOS - Australian Organic Standard / ACO - Australia Certified Organic and Brazil ProOrgânico - Agriculture Development Program [3], have already adopted standard programs for the regulation and development of this activity. This production system, which excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, non-organic pesticides and growth regulating products, is based on: the use of natural fertilizers; the maintenance of soil protected from sunlight and raindrops; crop rotation; the increase of biodiversity; intercropping of crops; green adubation; composting; and biological control of insects and diseases. [4] It also presupposes the maintenance of soil structure and depth without altering its properties through the use of synthetic chemicals.
