- Cover photo description:
- Located just a few miles south of Milan, Pavia, the ancient Ticinum, was founded in pre-roman times. It was at Pavia in 476 AD that the reign of the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire ended and Roman rule ceased in Italy. Pavia was also the capital of the Kingdom of the Lombards for more than 200 years. The Certosa di Pavia is a monastery and complex situated 5 miles north of Pavia that dates back to the 14th century. It is one of the largest monasteries in Italy.
