  • Built on the site of St Columba`s monastery, Iona Abbey was built by Viking Raghnall in 1200 AD as a centre for Benedictine worship. It fell into decline and ruin during the Reformation but was restored by Reverend George MacLeod and the newly formed Iona Community in 1938. The real Macbeth was King of Scots from 1040, when he killed the ruling king for the throne, until 1057 when he was killed. According to ancient reports, the king was buried on the tiny island of Iona off the western coast of Scotland, alongside many other medieval monarchs laid to rest at Iona Abbey. Iona is also the final resting place for many of the kings of Scotland. The cemetery, Reilig Odhráin, sits just next to the Abbey. It`s reputed to hold the bones of sixty kings. An inventory of 1549 recorded 48 Scottish kings, eight Norwegian Kings and four Irish Kings buried there.
