  • Butrint, a small settlement and archaeological site in southern Albania near the border with Greece, was in the ancient times an Illyrian settlement according to the myth founded by refugees from Troy, transformed in the 7th century BC into a Greek colony and port city. Butrint became in the following centuries an important center of worship of the god Asklepios. In the second century BC, the city came under the rule of Rome and functioned as an important port center until the sixth century AD, when it was devastated several times during the great migration of peoples. Later, the Catholic bishopric of Buthrotum. The medieval history of the city is closely associated with the Byzantine battles with the Normans and Venetians, followed by Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The remains of defensive walls, an ancient amphitheater from the 3rd century BC, ruins of houses, a baptistery from the 7th century, ruins of the Roman baths and a chapel from the 5th century were discovered in Butrint. There are also remains of a 14th-century Venetian castle.
