- This tower is known as the `Wuzhong first ancient temple` and the North temple tower.In 2006 it was listed as a protection unit of national key cultural relics . Beisi Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Suzhou, dating back more than 1700 years.It was first built during the Reign of Wu Chih-Wu in The Three Kingdoms period 238-251 AD. According to legend, it was built by Madame Wu, the mother of Sun Quan, and was called Tongxuan Temple in ancient times.During the Kaiyuan Period of the Tang Dynasty AD 713-741, it was renamed Kaiyuan Temple.It was rebuilt during the Reign of Xiande of the Northern Zhou Dynasty AD 954-959 and renamed The Temple of Gratitude.
