According to legend, Prague was founded in the 8th century by the Czech princess and soothsayer LibuÅ¡Ã and her husband PÅ™emysl, the founder of the PÅ™emyslid dynasty. Legend has it that LibuÅ¡e climbed a rocky cliff high above the Vltava River and prophesied: `I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars.` She ordered the construction of a castle on the site and called the city Prague. An important cult place became a promontory above the Vltava River, where Prince BoÅ™ivoj had the second Christian church in Bohemia built at the end of the 9th century, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the reign of BoÅ™ivoj`s son SpytihnÄ›v I. at the beginning of the 10th century, the entire plateau of the promontory was surrounded by a defensive wall and a princely palace was built here. Thus, the foundations of Prague Castle were laid, where the prince and his retinue from LevÃ½ Hradec moved. Prague became the center of the nascent Czech state. From Prague Castle and other fortified settlements in Central Bohemia, the PÅ™emyslid rulers began to administer the surrounding area, where they gradually subjugated the locals and forced them to pay benefits. The existence of the prince`s castle brought craftsmen and merchants to its castle grounds - a medieval town began to be born.
