  • Cover photo description:
  • Genus Verbascum species blattaria, moth mullein, a flowering biennial herb in the Scrophulariaceae figwort family. Native to Eurasia and North Africa, naturalized in the United States and most of Canada. Common name is moth mullein. Not the same as the more popular and widely known common mullein V. thapsus. Flowers grow on a single stalk and have five petals and five anther-bearing stamens. Blossoms are yellow or white and usually have a slight purple tinge. They have orange stamens covered in purple hairs, reminiscent of a moth’s antennae hence the name moth mullen. Toothed narrow leaves. May be a mosquito and cockroach repellant. Wildflower found in open fields, meadows, pastures, and open woods.
