  • Glacial ice starts off as minute and unique individual snowflakes. As the snow becomes compressed it loses crystal structure and becomes more transparent. The most compressed, hardest and oldest ice shows a blue colour as the light is absorbed through the spectrum and the slow waves are reflected giving the blue appearance. Icebergs then calve from the glacial front and float out to sea.
