  • Author: Lindalombardo
  • Cover photo description:
  • That unique mitten shape seen on the lower leaf is characteristic of the Sassafras Tree. North American species with brilliant colors in Autumn. Used to make root beer with origins back to the 1500`s. The leaves can be used to make Sassafras tea. The roots can be dug dug up, dried, and boiled also to make tea. The twigs and leaves are both edible, and can be eaten raw or cooked. Yet the safrole in sassafras root bark and oil is considered toxic and carcinogenic and was banned in the 1950`s. A complex plant, for sure.
