  • Cover photo description:
  • Rhinoceroses are a family of ungulate mammals from the superfamily rhinoceriformes, containing five modern species distributed in Africa and Asia. The main distinguishing feature of modern rhinos is the horns on the nose. Depending on the species, there may be one or two of them, and some fossil rhinoceros species did not have them at all. The anterior horn grows on the nasal bone, the posterior if present on the frontal part of the skull. Despite its hardness, the horns are not made up of bone tissue, but of concentrated keratin — a protein that is also present in the hair.
