Canine native to sub-Saharan Africa. Largest indigenous canine in Africa and the only extent family of genus Lycaon which is distinguished from canis by the identification highly specialized for hypercarnivorous diet, and a lack of dewclaws. Estimated that 6,600 adults including1400 mature individuals live in 39 subpopulations. Threatened by habitat fragmentation, human presecution and outbreaks of diseases. Listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Highky social. Females disperse from natal pack, once sexually mature. The young are allowed to feed on carcasses and are also fed by food that is regurgitated by the adults.Live in packs with dominance hierarchies.
