  • This Meerkat Suricata suricata and family was captured at the the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, on the outskirts of Pretoria, on Centurions side, Gauteng, South Africa. It is a small mongoose from Southern Africa - broad head, large eyes, twin tapering tailand a brindledcoat. Head and body length about 24-35cm 9.4-13.8in and weighs 0.62-0.97kg 1.4-2.1lbs Coat light Grey to yellowish brown with poorly defied light and dark bands. Meerkats have foreclaws adapted for digging and have the ability to thermoregulate to survive in harsh dry habitat. Three species is recognised They are eusocial. Form packs from 2-30 individuals. . Live in rock crevices in stony, often calcareous areas . They are active during the day, mostly early morning and late afternoon. Communicate with a broad variety of calls. Primarily insectivorous, feeds heavily on beetles lepidopterans, arthropods, small birds, reptiles and plant material. Breeding during yearwith peaks during rainy season. Gestation 60-70 days. Litter 3-7 pups. Occur in South Western Botswana, west and Soutn Namibia, North And West South Africa extending barely into South West Angola. Source: www.wikipedia.org
