- In 1891 the Cayuga Lake Salt Company was formed to mine for salt at the mouth of Salmon Creek in Myers, NY. Salt Point was named for the International Salt Company initially known as Cayuga Salt Co., which produced fine table and other salt products on this site from 1891 through 1962. Currently, this area of glacial Cayuga Lake is home to the deepest salt mine for roadsalt. At 2,300 feet, the mine is the deepest in North America.
