  • Preparations for the construction of the new Đakovo Cathedral /Croatia/ began as early as the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. The main initiator of the construction of this building was the Bishop of Đakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Strossmayer The painting of the cathedral was done by father and son Alexander Maximilian and Lodovico Seitz, In the crypt of the cathedral is the tomb of Bishop Strossmayer. The cathedral is decorated with seven altars, 43 frescoes, 31 saint statues and 32 reliefs. The pillars, walls and parts of the vaulted surfaces are decorated with geometric ornamental patterns of Slavonian folk embroidery painter-decorator Josip Voltolini. The interior of the cathedral is painted with biblical motifs in fresco technique. This work was painted for 12 years by German painters, father and son, Alexander-Maximilian Zeitz and Ludwig Zeitz, and three frescoes were signed by Roman painters Ludovico Ansiglioni and Nicola Consoni.
