Due to the location of the palace and the quality of the art, the complex is believed to have been home to a high priest or other dignitary. The complex may also have been used for ceremonial purposes. The name Quetzalpapálotl comes from the reliefs of mythological birds on the pillars of the courtyard and comes from Nahuatl quetzalli, precious feather, and pāpālōtl, a butterfly.
