  • In the 1940s Kilgore had more than 1,000 wooden oil derricks. In fact the streets of Kilgore were lined with oil derricks. One plot of land was known as the Worlds richest acre. Today these replicas or the old derricks are a reminder of the boom days in Kilgore. Christmas lights are hung on these steel derricks just as they where in the boom of the 1940s. There are sixty stars on sixty of the derricks to help the City of Kilgore maintain the States official title of `City of Stars`.
