  • Plague ColumnThe town of Jičín was probably founded at the end of the 12th century on the site of today's village of Staré Místo under the VeliÅ¡ castle. Shortly afterwards, it was moved two km further north to its current location, which was better protected by the Cidlina River. The first written mention of Jičín comes from a document of the wife of the Czech King Wenceslas II, Queen Guta (Jitka), dated August 1, 1293. It is assumed that the town was named after her (ie the town of Gutino, the town of Jitka in Czech). The city was built with a regular street layout around a rectangular square and was surrounded by wooden fortifications with reinforced bastions and a moat.
