- Icicles usually form when a layer of ice or snow melts due to direct exposure to the sun, or because it is located on a surface warmer than the surrounding environment, such as a roof of a heated building. The almost freezing water begins to drip, meets an area where the air is colder - for example a shadowy spot - and freezes again, forming an icicle drop by drop. The phenomenon occurs only in particular environmental conditions: if it is too cold the water freezes before dripping, if it is too hot the drops do not solidify and fall to the ground.
