  • Pictured is the first casting of the statue of King Kamehameha at Kapa`au in Kohala on the island of Hawai`i. This statue was created by Thomas R. Gould, a Boston sculptor living abroad in Florence, Italy. In 1878 Walter M. Gibson, a member of the Hawaiian government, was able to have the legislature appropriate $10,000 to create the statue to commemorate the 100-year arrival of Captain Cook to the Hawaiian Islands. The statue was completed too late for the anniversary but was shipped in 1883 from Paris, France where it had been cast in bronze. The ship wrecked near the Falkland islands and was thought lost, and another statue was quickly cast. The original was later recovered and is seen in this picture near the legendary king`s birthplace. It is flanked by the American and Hawaiian flags flying in the breeze.
