Cover photo info
- Photo title: Flat, Ploskaya, Tower of Izborsk fortress, Pskov region, Russia
- Author: Blossfeldia
- Cover photo description:
- The Ploskaya Tower was first mentioned in the chronicles of the 16th century. Until the eighties of the XIX century, its ruins were still visible above the surface of the earth. After the collapse of the wall of the Nikolsky Zhab, the remains of the tower were buried under the formed hill. The Ploska Tower was underground for more than 100 years - until, in 2011, its foundation was uncovered during archaeological research under the leadership of Ph.D. T.Yu. Zakurina. The original steps and 4 loopholes of the lower tier were opened, and the wooden structures of the well log were discovered, which was located in the lower tier of the tower. Until that time, it was believed that the fortress had only one source of water that could be used during sieges - a secret manhole leading to the Nikolsky well.
