- Photo title: Sumatran Elephant Subspecies of the Asian elephant
- Author: Koty82127
- Cover photo description:
- Sumatran Elephant Subspecies of the Asian elephant One of the three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant, endemic to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. In 2011, Sumatran elephants were classified as `endangered` by the IUCN due to the fact that their numbers have decreased by at least 80% over the past three generations. The threat to Sumatran elephants is habitat loss, degradation, fragmentation of the range and poaching; more than 69% of the elephant`s range area has been lost in the last 25 years. Most of the remaining forest cover is less than 250 km2, which is not enough to support viable elephant populations.
