  • The House of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia is a building on Nikola PaÅ¡ić Square in Belgrade. Originally known as the Assembly of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1936 to 1945, when it was renamed the Federal Assembly. The new name was maintained during the existence of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. After the dissolution of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, on July 23, 2006, this House became the official building of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The construction of the parliament took a very long time, almost 30 years. The cornerstone was laid on August 27, 1907 by the King of Serbia, Petar I KaraÄ‘orÄ‘ević, but the construction was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. The continuation of works did not begin immediately after the end of the war, so the building was completed only in 1936, and the first session of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was held in this building on October 21, 1936. The parliament building was designed by the architect Jovan Ilkić, who passed away in 1917, without waiting for the construction to be completed. By the decision of the Assembly of the City of Belgrade from 1984, the House of the National Assembly was declared a cultural monument.
