  • The castle of the Innominato, so named because of the homonymous character of `I promessi sposi` by Alessandro Manzoni, is a fortified complex dating back to the fourteenth century located on the border between the municipalities of Vercurago and Lecco on the top of the Sacro Monte di Somasca in about 185 m asl The first permanent settlement in the castle area dates back to the early Iron Age and was built by some members of the Golasecca culture, a Celtic population that developed between the 9th century BC. and the 5th century BC between eastern Piedmont and the Canton of Ticino. Being located on the hill where the castle stands today, the settlement was located in a strategic place as it allowed the visual control of the Garlate lake and of the communication routes towards the alpine valleys. Furthermore, from this place it was possible to watch over the road that connected Bergamo to Como in the 5th century BC. it constituted the main link between the Etruscans and the transalpine Celts with whom this culture had flourishing commercial relations then interrupted in 388 BC. from the invasion of the Gauls which determined the end of the Golasecca culture.
