- Photo title: Limestone chimney. Jenny Brown`s Point, Silverdale, Lancashire
- Author: Wraight
- Cover photo description:
- The limestone chimney at Jenny Brown`s Point in Silverdale, Lancashire, on the edge of Morecambe Bay has been associated with copper smelting, and even iron smelting. Associated structures have long since disappeared although traces of iron ore can be found in the nearby beach deposits. There was extensive iron mining across the estuary in the Crag Foot area, as well as some limited local trials on the Silverdale side. However, the chimney is `clean` inside which suggests it may not have been used or has perhaps been renovated. Another possible suggestion is that it was intended as a chimney for a pumping engine for an aborted land reclamation scheme. Notice the glaciated limestone between the chimney and sand.
