- Photo title: Alaska Ethnic Dance Fans Grass and Caribou Hairn
- Author: Mickem
- Cover photo description:
- Hand-held fans accentuate the fluid movements of a dancer’s arms. They were used in traditional ceremonies of Yup’ik dancers in Southern Alaska. Yup’ik women use dance fans made of woven grass and caribou whiskers or feathers.Although the name `Eskimo` was commonly used in Alaska to refer to Inuit and Yupik people, this usage is now considered unacceptable by many Alaska Natives. Alaska Natives prefer to be known by the names they use in their own languages, such as Inupiaq or Yupik. `Inuit` is now the current term in Alaska and across the Arctic, and `Eskimo` is fading from use.
