  • An eastern gray squirrel, common in states such as New Jersey, seems to be hovering or even flying. Actually, this one is merely taking a big hop, or leap. In the wild they live typically 5-10 years. But in captivity they may have a lifespan of 10 to 20 years. They may nest or live where they can burrow in the ground. They are omnivores and have a diet of such fare as trees, seeds, berries, nuts plants, insects and even bird eggs and small amphibians. They are distinguished by their long and bushy tail.
