  • Votivkirche or Votive Church is a temple of the Roman Catholic Church in Vienna. The church is located in the Alsergrund district next to the University of Vienna. The Votivkirche was erected in the neo-Gothic style in gratitude for the rescue of the young Emperor Franz Joseph during the attempt on his life on February 18, 1853. The height of the church is 99 meters, making it the second highest among the churches in Vienna. The call for fundraising for the construction of the church, announced by the emperor`s brother Ferdinand Maximilian, was answered by 300 thousand citizens of the empire. In a competition of 75 projects, the winner was the project of the 26-year-old architect Heinrich von Ferstel. The construction of the temple lasted 23 years. The church was consecrated on April 24, 1879, the day of the emperor`s silver wedding.
