  • Cover photo description:
  • The black drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) belongs to the drongo family Dicruridae and is a tiny Asian passerine bird. It is a regular permanent breeder throughout much of tropical southern Asia, from southwest Iran to India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and east to southern China and Indonesia, as well as an occasional visitor to Japan. It's an all-black bird with a striking forked tail that's 28 cm long (11 in). It feeds on insects and can be found throughout its range in open agricultural areas and light forest, perching prominently on bare perches or along power or telephone wires. The species is noted for its violent behavior toward much larger birds, such as crows, and will dive-bomb any bird that comes close.
